Yusuf / Cat Stevens

Proof a Yousef can be a Cat.

Born Steven Demetre Georgiou in London in 1948, he became one of the defining singer-songwriters of the 1970s as Cat Stevens, with songs including "Wild World," "Father and Son," "Peace Train" and his recording of "Morning Has Broken." Albums such as Tea for the Tillerman (1970) and Teaser and the Firecat (1971) sold in the millions.

In 1977 he embraced Islam and took the name Yusuf Islam. For many years he stepped away from pop music to focus on education and charity, founding schools in London.

He returned to mainstream recording in 2006 with An Other Cup, released under the name Yusuf, and today performs and records as Yusuf / Cat Stevens. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. In 2026 his 1974 album Buddha and the Chocolate Box was reissued in a new remaster.

He is proof that a Yousef can also be a Cat. Our scientists are still studying how.
